I am currently looking for someone to help out with this blog. I didn't realize the scope that this blog would effect. Hits from countries in political strife and the like, people looking for a way to communicate outside of government control. If you would like to help please send me an email George dot Endrulat at Gmail dot Com.

Technically Easy, Socially difficult. You would need a large number of people to cooperate before it became useful

I'm not worried about the social part.

I think the initial set-up will be the most difficult. But I already have 3 houses that I can use as relays if needed.

Are you looking to beam a wifi signal straight to his house or blanket an entire area? The former is pretty easy to do. The latter takes quite a bit more work and co-operation.

Hey, originally I was considering the former. But then that led to the latter. Even a selective "blanket". Basically, I was thinking of pooling some people together and sharing the cost. Likely want to start simple and take it from there.

pretty easy actually, depending on the size of the geographic area. To be honest, each version of the 802.11 protocol increases the range, so it may be in your best interest to wait until the next one is released for two reasons:

  1. If you're willing to spending the money on the newest (currently n), the next version will be better or
  2. If you're happy with the current version (n), it will be dirt cheap once the next version comes out

Edit: If you are looking to put wifi straight to a particular area and you have a line of sight, microwave technology could easily assist getting a signal from Pt A to Pt B.

hey, good point. I like number 2, get the stuff dirt cheap.

I handle all of the purchasing for my IT dept, and that's something I always do. NEVER NEVER NEVER get the newest best thing, either get 1 generation back for 1/2 price, or wait until something newer comes out and the price on what is currently newest to drop. It's really the only way unless you like paying out the ass.
